How can EMDR help me?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain process difficult or distressing experiences so they feel less overwhelming. Using guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation, EMDR can help reduce the intensity of painful memories, negative thoughts, anxiety, and emotional distress. It may help clients feel more grounded, improve emotional regulation, and develop healthier beliefs about themselves and their experiences.
The History & Training of EMDR: EMDR was developed by psychologist Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s after she discovered that certain eye movements appeared to reduce the distress associated with difficult memories. Since then, EMDR has become a widely recognized, evidence-based approach for trauma and other distressing experiences. EMDR training is specialized and typically requires a licensed mental health professional to complete an approved foundational training that includes both didactic education and supervised clinical practice.
EMDR can benefit children, teens, and adults who are struggling with the effects of trauma, anxiety, grief, difficult life experiences, or distressing memories. It may also be helpful for people experiencing negative self-beliefs, emotional triggers, or patterns that continue to affect their relationships and daily lives. EMDR is tailored to each individual’s needs and can help clients move toward feeling safer, more confident, and more in control of their emotions.
We have four therapists who are trained from an EMDRIA approved program that offer EMDR therapy sessions, Iana Binde-Pereira, Karissa Montanez, Nadene Nappi and Ashley Williams. Reach out to learn more and hear their availability for new EMDR clients.
